“The Butterfly Effect” is a truly fascinating concept and if I were about one hundred times the mathematician I fancy myself to be I’d have a grand time drawing my parallels to it, Chaos Theory and the sentiment of this article. Its basic layman’s point is one worth noting, though. Basically, the minutest of actions/non-actions can and will have, over time, effects on the grandest of scales. Simpler put yet, the little stuff of today becomes the epic stuff of tomorrow.

As a “fan” of increasingly rare traits like accountability, determination, and loyalty (to name a few), I often revel in the opportunity to seize opportunities to be “greater”. Now whereas I’d hardly be found claiming perfection in any way, shape, or form, I do know full will that often in life we have opportunities to make changes in our future. What many don’t realize, or assign enough significance to (as in the purpose of this article!), is that the opportunities present themselves every second, of every minute, of every hour.

What’s my point? Reality FORCES upon us a role in its plan. Whether we like it or not we make a difference. Be it small or large, good or bad, a product of our action or of its omission…we matter. At birth, a character in the video game of our lives appears on the screen and a joystick (“controller” for you youngins) is placed at our feet. We can choose to pick the joystick up or not, but the game is already on and playing. We can try our best to not get in anything’s way, but the pace of time carries on. No matter what we do, or do not do, we make something happen. Confused yet? Don’t be!

“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” – Abe Lincoln

” A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.” – Bob Dylan

“The difference between a good man and a bad one is the choice of the cause.” – William James

” Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” – Tony Robbins

See? Good to GREAT people all knew the lesson I’m trying to share. Where are those great people who feel staying out of a race is the ideal way to win one? To overlook character as the most effective means of building some? To be a follower is the best way to lead? To hold your ground as the quickest way to the top of the mountain? Why, they’re all around us, but there’s one thing worth mentioning…They’ll never be great.

So what are we to do? Well, the short answer is “something on purpose”. The better one is “whatever you can to create the best version of you”. But whatever you choose, never again say life and its choices are “no big deal”.

A note to all who would see guns “controlled”…

by Master Chim on December 17, 2012

Who is it that would do the “controlling”?  Who would be charged with controlling the “controllers”? Where would be the system of checks and balances that forged the machine that helped the U.S.A. grow into the greatest nation to ever exist?

Who are those that would now be criminal for doing what’s been done since the founding of our country? What would happen to our already overpopulated prisons? When would our nation become the largest enforcer in history of victimless crimes?

The “gun debate” is a silly one, in my opinion. To remove citizens’ guns requires “removers”. They would always be a force that would be restrained from tyranny by nothing more than what…their good nature? It’s irresponsible for some to have such strong opinions over a topic and culture they know little to zero about, less responsible still to rely on an anomaly of human nature to execute and maintain this plan for peace.

Every day around the world evil people attack the lives of others with fire, automobiles, blades, and other objects that are harmless in the hands of  non-threatening people. It is inaccurate to lay blame on anything other than the evil, and regulating the means would do nothing to prevent such evil’s existence.

Educate yourself first. Learn what it is to hold, shoot, even carry a firearm. THEN feel free to cite your reasons for removing another’s right to do the same. Until then, do what you want, protect what you have, but leave the welfare of others in their hands, not yours.

October 8, 2012

A Homeschool Dad’s Perspective on Martial Arts for Kids As a homeschool dad, professional martial artist, and martial arts school business owner, I have the luxury of a perspective not shared by many. From the early hours of the day when my wife’s preparing the kids’ morning meals, to Jiu Jitsu lessons throughout the afternoons, [...]

Master, Student, and the Third Party

September 4, 2012

What’s happened to the Martial Artist? After a whole slew of recent debates over my training methods, goals, intentions, and even credibility, I have to say calling me “disgusted” right now would be an understatement. Many who consider themselves Martial Artists these days seem to use the term out of convenience, ignorance, and/or an overall [...]

Tactical Applications of the Smile

August 5, 2012

“Man, I hate that guy!” says the hater… I wasn’t long ago that I, too, suffered from being an occasional, inadvertent, “hater”. A few years back, before I’d become a father, I was in what I could only determine to be a “rut” with my main business, my martial arts academy here in the Bronx, [...]

A Homeschool Dad’s Answer for the “Socialization” Question

July 11, 2012

“As a homeschool dad, shouldn’t you be worried about how he gets along with other kids his age?”   “But what about socialization?” “Aren’t you worried your son’s not gonna have any friends?” I get these questions asked all the time, and frankly, I can’t understand why I’m asked it at all. Now I’m not [...]

Master Chim 101: What it means to be a Man. (Controversy Alert!)

July 6, 2012

How many of you “men” have ever said, in one way or another, “My family is safer when they’re with me.”? I’d guess many of you have either said that or at least felt that way to some extent, at some point. Well, have you ever wondered why that statement is (or isn’t) a true [...]

Can a Homeschool Dad Take the Summer Off?

June 28, 2012

So, I’ve had a bunch of folks ask what I plan on doing for the summer with Raidan, my 5 year old, during the summer months with his homeschooling. Do I take the summer off? Is a homeschool dad like a school teacher, getting a big break during the year’s “fun months”? Lol…NO! See, when [...]

Homeschool Dad, Martial Arts School Owner,…Fashionisto?

June 23, 2012

Lol! No, I am not a “Fashionisto“, but I do have some exciting news regarding my role in a new apparel company! Rough Zen (roughzen.com) is a new Samurai/Bushido themed company with some of my very dearest ideas at its core. Based on the notion of we having the ability to be “Modern Day Samurai” [...]
